Once upon a time I used to go to many a drag show; the memories are a little fuzzy as they were late in the evening at a nightclub after copious amounts of liquor had been ingested.

With the above in mind I was looking forward to seeing a show earlier in the evening and before a night of drinking and dancing.

After some confusion about where to go once inside the venue (The British Crown Hotel), we settled down at our table, right in front of the small stage set up in the (currently being renovated) function room upstairs.

My two male companions were immediately aware that for the evening they would be prime targets for the performers… a premonition perhaps?

Spag and Drag is hosted by the very energetic and likable Jillette (the best a man can get), who revved us up as much as possible for a Wednesday evening and after a friendly introduction, including lots of interaction with the crowd, the show started.

With a mix of solo and group performances, serious songs and hilarious parody, I found myself singing along heartily and enjoying the sparkle and costumes, the professional but personable deliveries.

Miss Bunny and Jackie Stevens joined Jillette on stage and all seemed to enjoy performing as much as we enjoyed watching.

The show started around 8:30 and included three sets throughout the evening. The Spag portion of the night arrived after the first set, 9pm-ish, with the final set finishing around 11pm.

Dinner (Spag) was possibly a little late in the evening, maybe in future serving the meal before the show starts might create less tummy rumblings during the first set. That being said, the staff managed to serve the 50+ guests without fuss or bother or much interruption to chatter.

The final set was the gran finale with Annie, the Nanny and a Tranny in Oz, a riotous mix of old time favourite shows, with a bit of a special drag bent.
All in all a very enjoyable evening; it was so enjoyable, I managed to forget the 1000 things I had to get done the next day.

For some escape and laughs, go along to Spag & Drag… they are playing every Wednesday and Saturday for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and then each Saturday from then on at The British Crown Hotel.
